7,000 Hudson-Mohawk Valley (NY) Vital Records, 1808-1850 by Fred Q. Bowman and Thomas J. Lynch
Prior to 1880, official marriage and death records were rarely filed in NY. Newspaper records can often be used to overcome this deficiency in record keeping and newspaper records often contain more detailed information than cemetery, church and town record books. Marriage notices give info such as names of the bride and groom, date of the marriage, place of marriage, parents' names, and the officiating minister. The death notices give name, date and place of death, age at death, sometimes the cause of death, occupation and survivors. The names of the individuals included in this book were taken from these newspapers: Rome Citizen, Herkimer Herald, Bunker Hill, Mohawk Courier, Montgomery Phoenix and Fort Plain Advertiser, West Troy Advocate and Watervliet Advertiser, Albany Gazette, Daily Albany Argus, American Eagle, Ulster Telegraph, Newburgh Journal, Putnam Democrat and Democrat Courier, Westchester Republican, Highland Democrat and Hudson River Chronicle. Memoirs of the Treat Family by Ronald W. Collins and Glenn Dellinger
The Treat family arrived in North America as part of
the Great Migration that settled many of the leading New
England families into their new world homes. The earliest
of that name in the new world was Richard Treat
(1584-1669). He was one of the original founders of
Wethersfield, CT. He came to Wethersfield probably in
1636 or 1637 with his wife Alice Gaylord and several
children. In this book is the complete Treat Genealogy.
The great-great-great-grandson of the settler Richard
Treat was one Cornelius Treat (1766-1847). Cornelius
wrote and left behind a recollection of his life. This
memoir has been passed down through his descendants until
a copy reached Glenn C. Dellinger whose wife, Sue Gruver
Dellinger, is a descendant of Cornelius. The memoir of
Cornelius is presented here for the first time to the
general public. Cornelius writes about his active role in
the American Revolution, and his trials to move to the
central region of NY and start a family. Here, like in
all early family stories, are successes and failures,
tales of courage and strength, and times of tenderness
and reflection.
Also included are two other
Treat memoirs, those of Mercy Phelps Wells (1819-1904)
and Cornelia Phelps Stiles (1827-1904), both grand nieces
of Cornelius Treat. The memoirs of Mercy and Cornelia
tell of the trials, challenges and close family bonds
needed to be a pioneering family. These two recollections
tell the story of the Treat family as it moved west from
New England through NY and on into the Ohio Valley. These
stories contain both triumphs and deadly disasters.
The book also contains the
Treat genealogy, as well as the following family
genealogies: Coleman, Woodbridge, Bryan, Dudley,
Bulkeley, Gaylord, Grosvenor, Charlton, Chauncey and
Eyre.

The author of The Sexagenary is unknown but the work has been attributed to either John P. Becker, long a resident of Salem, Washington Co., NY, or Rev. Samuel Rogers, first pastor of the Baptist church at Schulerville. The father of Mr. Rogers was a teamster in the American army and his son was often with him and my have learned the facts contained the The Sexagenary first-hand. The author states: "I am by no means a veteran--I never was in actual combat, but I can shoulder my crutch, exulting at the remembrance of the fight, and show how fields were won. I was neither continental, nor levy. I served in the unpretending, but not useless character of a wagoner, in the quarter master's department, at one time actively employed in forwarding cannon, and laboring with my own horses. My station in life was that of a farmer in respectable circumstances, and rather above that which furnished the usual recruits for the regular army." The author provides us iwth a fascinating desciption of his actions as a teamster in the Revolutionary War. He descibes life in Albany, Wahsington, Saratoga and Rensselaer Counties of NY and portions of VT. The book is a very readable hisory of the Revolution in the eastern portion of NY, written by someone who lived through the hard times. Originally published in 1866, this version of The Sexagenary is a photocopy of the original book and includes the oringal index. Soft cover, indexed, 234 pages.(1866) 1999.#9910 $20.00
